Publishing Non Fiction

Has anyone written a non-fiction book and was it successful?
Of course there are so many subjects in non fiction. Has anyone been published, what sort of income has someone achieved in terms of royalties. And is it worth writing a book or not. Any writers here?
There are many non-fiction books that have been very successful and made their authors household names. Just watch Oprah, or just about any other adult oriented talk show for a while and you will find many examples.
The most famous one I can think of, off the top of my head, would be Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus by John Gray. When this book came out, he was literally, The Man. He was on every talk show, had national speaking tours and all kinds of seminars. If you can get into that type of situation, then you can make tons of money.
The most popular areas would likely be self-help/psychology, biographies (like John Adams by David McCullough) or food/cooking. There are many other topics to write about, but these topics seem very popular and saleable.
