Poetry Publishing House
With whom can I send a completed short story too? Is there a particular publishing house I can send it too?
along with some poetry? Thanks for your answers in advance!
Is there a particular publishing house/establishment I can send it too that you know of?
It is extremely difficult to get things like this published, especially if you are a new author. I hate to rain on your parade, but you must know that in the USA more than 7,000 new offerings are ignored or rejected for every one that is published.
In that harsh environment, there are about three things you can do:
1. Try a literary agent. Most of them are hacks who are starving as badly as their clients are. But occasionally you can strike it rich with the literary agents. Some of them really do have connections inside the publishing industry, and can get you wired. There are hundreds of them; most have internet presences of some kind, and alphabetical order is as good as any.
2. Try a print-on-demand publishing site. They are nice because it doesn’t cost you anything to “publish” your book. Just run an internet search on “print-on-demand publishing.” I use Lulu.com; there are 50 more and they all work about the same.
3. Are you a college graduate? See if your alma mater has a University Press. These often give an edge to alumni of the institution that funds them. You can submit your work to any university press, but your own is best.
These are the best ways unless you are an established author. It is a rough-and-tumble game, and you should wear your spiritual shin guards every day. Expect to be rejected at least 100 times for every time you get a break.
As you drive or walk around your neighborhood, remember that several of those garages and basements are stacked up with boxes of books that someone paid a few thousand dollars to have printed in hopes of getting published. Some of them are quite good. Many deserve their fate.
Also remember that if you can spell and form a complete sentence you are ‘way ahead of the game. About 6,500 of those 7,000 are ungrammatical, unedited, poorly organized, and not worth picking up. So if you really can write, your chances are much better.
Also be aware that there are many scam artists in the publishing industry, and that your market is just naturally declining. Under the Reagan-Bush-Bush philosophy, the number of Americans who read books has been declining for 20 years. The decline is likely to continue, though improvements in the education system will help.
Having said all that, I will conclude with well wishes. What you are dreaming of CAN be done. It requires patience and fortitude.
