Independent Book Publishing
Is there such a thing as an entry level comic book writer?
Most companies seem to accept work from writers who already have published stories, making it difficult to obtain street cred unless you self publish, do web comics, or write for another medium first. Are there exceptions, like independent comic publishers that accept scripts from completely new writers or in anthologies? I’ve only found companies that accept completed pages from an artist-writer team if they accept new submissions at all.
Unfortunately the profits from comics don’t vastly overshoot the cost, time and effort that goes into making a comic from concept to final product to allow the majority of publishers to take a chance on untested, amateur writers. One of the most effective ways of getting publishers and companies interested in you is to write and complete a comic or comics yourself. You need to prove that you have the chops necessary to write a good script and that you can write something that others will enjoy and flock to.
So, get to writing, find an artist-friend and get that idea onto paper!
