About How Long Does It Take To Write, Publish, And Sell A Book?
Very long with about 900 pages.
1 – how long will it take your to write the book? Then edit it? Get is critiqued? Edit it again? Have it in proper manuscript format? Determine it’s word count and genre? Whether you want just a few copies for yourself, friends, and family, or do you want it available in stores?
2 – how long will it take you to learn enough about how publishing really works? You need to know enough to avoid falling victim to a scam (there are a lot of scams out there). Some of what you need to know are:
–the difference between traditional and self publishing and why self publishing has a poor reputation in the industry
–what proper manuscript format is
–how to write a query letter and synopsis
–why knowing word count and genre are important
–the difference between copyright and publishing rights
–what an advance is and how royalties really work
–how selling to the magazine market is different from the book market
–what unsolicited means
–what an agent does for an author besides selling the manuscript to an editor at a publishing house
–how to spot a scam before it bites you
3 – how long will it take you to research agents and select appropriate ones to submit your query letter to? How long will it take for them to respond?
4 – if accepted, how long will it take for you to make any editorial changes needed? How long will it take to sell to an editor? How long will it take to make any more editorial changes?
5 – from this point, the process can take a few months to two years. Additional editorial needs are addressed, cover art is designed, marketing is developed, reviews and blurbs are sought, pre-sell begins, market timing is decided, print run is made, and distribution begins. All of this is done at the publishers expense and by experienced people in the industry. It takes time. Despite what self publishers claim about it, the time this takes is a good thing. Most authors are not capable of doing all of this themselves and if self publishers actually did these things, too, it would take them just as long.
On average, once a book sells to a traditional publisher, it takes 9 to 24 months to be on the shelf at a store. Self publishing may be faster, but, your book will NOT be on shelves. Book stores and libraries do not want self published work (for a lot of reasons).
Traditional publishing is free. And you get paid an advance. Self publishing costs you money (hundreds or thousands of dollars). Even the supposedly free self publishers will cost you money eventually.
