How To Get Your Book Published
How do you publish a book, and does it cost anything to get your book published?
Depends on what you do! If you self-publish (vanity publisher), then yes, it will cost you money, and probably a lot of it. Anyone can self-publish, too, so it doesn’t give you much credibility as a writer, honestly. But if you’re not interested in having credibility and just want to see your book in print quickly, this is an ok option.
Personally what I am planning to do is get my novel agented. These days, you can’t get your book published by a traditional publisher (Penguin, Harper Collins, etc) without first getting an agent. You just have to find some good literary agents (most libraries have listings) and query them, usually with a synopsis of your book. I recommend querying several agents at a time because honestly, with the amount of queries these individuals get, chances are they will not accept you right off the bat. So you need to have numbers on your side.
Once an agent has accepted to represent you and your work (it sort of works like a lawyer in that respect), he or she will attempt to sell it to appropriate publishers (by this I simply mean publishers who specialize in your genre, audience aim, etc.). This all costs you NOTHING. If an agent demands a fee outright, IT IS A SCAM. The way it works is, when your agent sells your book to a publisher, they get a percentage of the money your book makes. YOU PERSONALLY owe nothing to the agent. If the agent chooses to represent you, it is usually because there is no way any publisher in their right mind would refuse to publish your book. They don’t charge you a fee because they know the book will appeal to the publisher and it will be easy enough to sell.
