Book Publishing Guide

Guides on how to get a book published, and alternatives to using publishers?
Hi,
I’m trying to help a friend get a book published and am looking for a detailed how-to guide including alternatives. She’s already been rejected by several publishers and I’m wondering if anyone can point me to a particularly thorough guide on how to get a book “out there?” The more detailed the guide the better. Or maybe if someone can recommend a good (recent) book on it which takes into account how the internet has changed the world of publishing.
Thanks
From my personal experience blogs written by editors and literary agents are the best “how-to” guides. Not only is their a ton of information but it’s current. They have daily or weekly posts so the information is always fresh. Imagine that you knew a literary agent. You would ask them for the information you are looking for right? Well, since you don’t have a literary agent friend just read their blogs. I’ve been answering questions like this for the past year or two and at least ninety percent of the information I got came from blogs written by industry professionals. I’ve been getting reported for giving short answers with links included so I’ll just say that reading through My Starred Questions should give you a good start. Keep in mind that it takes more than an ability to write to get published. Your friend is going to have to spend a lot of time researching the industry, researching query letters and industry etiquette and more. If you’re up to it I have about one hundred starred questions that deal with publishing. Check out the links within them. I always suggest starting at the beginning of any one particular blog and reading EVERY single post until all questions and curiosities are answered. Good luck.
EDIT: I should mention that writers can communicate directly with literary agents through their blogs and agents *really* like it when blog subcribers query them (that’s I big part of why they blog in the first place).
