American Children’s Book Publishers

â € œWriting this book was like living in an epic adventure for me, â € described Corey Habben, author and illustrator of The Runaway Scarf (Muslims Writers Publishing, 2008). In an interview, members described the process of transforming your idea into a Muslim Children € ™ s book, a series of events that took almost 4 years from concept to publication.
Members concerned that a non-Muslim to the entertainment media often portrays Muslims as oppressive in many film and television productions. Members and many other Muslims living in the United States consider such representations to be more likely distorted that non-Muslims to the erroneous conclusion that Islam condones oppression.
Members states, â € œThere many Qura € ™ a verse and haddiths that speak against oppression.â €
Dr. Muzammil H. Siddiqi, President of the Fiqh Council of North America in a fatwa States IslamOnline.net question and answer forum on slavery, â € œThe Qura € ™ one teaches that freeing slaves is a great virtue (See Surah 90:13). One of the expenses of the Zakat (obligatory charity) is to spend the money for the freedom of the slaves (Sura 9:60). It is forbidden in Islam to enslave a free person.id €
Members wanted to convey similar concepts to children in an entertaining and compelling way, so after going to a hadith which tells of a slave who left their oppressors, members wrote a ™ € Children s history. She then spent a year of planning and illustrating drawings.
â € œPrevious to 2007, the book would be published by another grant individual who had agreed to sponsor through his business. So, the funds were depleted, â € members recalled that it was a long waiting period in the hope that funds would become available.
When that didnâ € ™ t happen, then members considered publishing his story and drawings, that is, until the Muslims of writers picked up the manuscript publication.
â € œMuslim Writers Publishing was wonderful to work with them. Linda actually spends a great deal of time making sure the publication process is transparent for the author. I was very grateful for that, â € says members. â € OEI pray the book will be something of value to parents, educators and children.â € œ
Members noted that the act of writing fiction for Muslims can bring a great responsibility to ensure that Islamic values are presented fairly and in fact is independent of fiction. Members said that is why the book contains a warning that Runaway handkerchief is a work of fiction and parents and teachers should ensure that instill in children the ability to discern the difference.
â € œTeaching Islamic concepts to children in creative ways, brings a great responsibility to ensure that students understand the difference between the concepts taught by other means and actual Scripture itself, â € offers members. She plans to provide a free supplement online learning for educators can use in lessons Runaway Scarf class.
She is also the hope that K-12 librarians and educators in the U.S. use the book to expose children to culture non-Muslims Islamic heritage.
Members said, â € œIt would mean a lot if the Runaway Scarf made out of the Muslim community. It would be like a door between Muslims and non Muslims kids.â €
The Runaway Scarf is 52 pages, color illustrated paperback, published by Writers Muslims, and is available for purchase from stores like Amazon.com, BarnesandNoble.com and other bookstores.
